For the realization of this project we used the Cartostation framework developed by Atelier Cartographique, a Brussels-based cooperative with which we regularly collaborate.

A.T.L.A.S. makes it possible to visualize some of the data from IBEFE’s triennial Analytical and Prospective Report, to embody figures and rates in the territory and to cross-reference different information, thus offering a tool for reflection, orientation, analysis and prospective.

Geomatic support for Natagriwal.

Natagriwal produces expert reports to support the development of agri-environmental measures for farmers. We support their activity by managing their spatial database and by developing cartographic clients to interact with their spatial data.

In a first phase, we set up a PostgreSQL/PostGIS database with a QGIS client. In a second phase, we developed in Javascript a dedicated cartographic application that integrates with the expert reports redaction application (in PHP). Compared to the use of a classical GIS software, the cartographic application allowed to simplify the writing of expert reports for Natagriwal’s officers.

Development of a topographic map style for OpenStreetMap data.

OpenArdenneMap is a topographic map style for OpenStreetMap data that is particularly suited for printing high quality paper maps. This style is internally developed and available under an opensource licence. The map style counts original symbols, colour choice, textures and fonts and is specifically adapted for some particularities of the Ardenne area. It is used by local tourism offices.

In October 2018, a map made with the OpenArdenneMap style was awarded as the best map at the FOSS4G.be conference, Brussels.

QGIS plugin & OsmAnd configuration

Software development for an R&D project on street lighting measurement.

We developed a QGIS plugin for the preparation of field missions on road networks. The plugin allows to download road network data from OpenStreetMap, to process them, to split them in batch before exporting them to OsmAnd, an open-source Android application. Then, we configured the OsmAnd application to support the field missions. In particular, we adapted the map style to specific attributes by rewriting OsmAnd’s road network rendering style.

Adaptation of the GeoNature-Citizen web portal for a collaborative geodata collection project. Carried out for the municipality of Wasseiges in partnership with the GAL Meuse@Campagnes. This portal is used for an inventory of biodiversity elements and wood resources by citizens.

For this service, we have used and adapted the GeoNature-citizen software, an open-source solution originally developed by the Parc Naturel des Écrins (France). Several bugs and improvements were reported to the GeoNature developer community.

Development of a digital tool for the diagnostic and risk management specific to certain water catchment zones. A first part of the webGIS application allows users to consult data and statistics related to different water catchment zones. Following this a methodological tool offers users the possiblility to identify different solutions based on their efficiency in protecting a water catchment zone.

The application is part of a bigger research project conducted by the Catholic University of Leuven.

We supported the development team for the choice of technologies and their use, especially QGIS as a general client of the application and PostGIS for spatial processing. We investigated and analysed road network data available for various countries, as well as technical implementations of the Chinese Postman problem (optimisation for completely visiting a network).

The mission was about training the team, online support, project follow-up, and the writing of technical notes.

Sur demande de Natagora, nous avons mis en place un procédé automatique permettant de créer et de mettre à jour des cartes de promenades. Ces cartes, basées sur des données OpenStreetMap, montrent des itinéraires balisés de promenades passant au travers ou à proximité de réserves naturelles gérées par Natagora. Elles sont destinées à être intégrée dans un guide de promenades édité par Natagora. Le répertoire des promenades de Natagora a été numérisé sous forme de données géographiques pouvant être utilisées dans d’autres projets.

Creation of a map for the district of Brugelette, Belgium.

The map depicts the entity of Brugelette, a small district of rural Belgium. The local authorities of Brugelette did want to renew the map of the district, which is usually distributed to the new inhabitants and available in local shops and points of interests. The map is based on OpenStreetMap data with a original map style applied to two different scales. We organised several mapping parties with local people to progressively add thousands of buildings, but also shops, POIs, sidewalks, land-use, sport facilities, etc.

Mise en place d’un système d’information spatial et temporel, transversal et commun à l’ensemble des services de l’administration Perspective.brussels, en charge de l’urbanisme de la région Bruxelles Capitale.

Une analyse fonctionnelle poussée a précédée le design de la base de données, tandis que des ateliers avec les différents opérateurs ont permis de faire converger une partie de la structure informationelle, tout en conservant les spécificités des différents métiers.

Les différents besoins sont adressés par le développement d’applicatifs dédiés, sur une plateforme commune et open-source.

Actualisation des axes de ruissellement concentrés à l’échelle de la Wallonie et correction du réseau hydrographique wallon.

En partenariat avec Dr. Alexandre Maugnard, nous avons recalculé les axes de ruissellement concentrés à l’échelle de la Wallonie à partir d’un modèle numérique de terrain (MNT) à un mètre de résolution. Le MNT a été spécifiquement filtré pour coller davantage à la réalité de terrain. Dans une deuxième phase, le réseau hydrographique wallon a été amélioré sur base du MNT. Le volume des données générées (plusieurs To) a imposé de belles contraintes pour les géotraitements et le stockage des fichiers.

Geothermal portal

Development of a mapping portal of the geothermal potential for Brussels region. Realised for Bruxelles-Environnement, in partnership with APERe (BE) and Atelier Cartographique (BE).

The mission consisted of presenting geological data via an original cartographic interface, combining a classical slippy map to a 3D viewer. At each point of the region at a resolution of 10m, a precise geological profile is automatically extracted when you click on the map. This application is intended for the informed general public and geothermal energy professionals in the Brussels Region. The application is integrated into the Brussels-Environment open source mapping platform.

Réalisation du cadastre solaire de la région Bruxelles Capitale pour Bruxelles Environnement, en partenariat avec l’APERe (BE), Atelier Cartographique (BE) et MeteoTest (CH).

Infrastructure pour les projets de développement

Champs-Libres gère sa propre infrastructure informatique de cloud.

Cette infrastructure lui permet d’héberger les projets de ses clients. Elle a été construite pour permettre le déploiement des projets de manière fréquente, de manière à réduire le cycle développement - mise en production.

Quelques caractéristiques ;

l’infrastructure est basée sur docker swarm (Kubernetes en développement) ;
elle est répartie sur 8 serveurs virtuels ;
elle héberge 15 projets différents, et 20 stacks docker swarm ;
certains projets servent deux millions de pages par jour (comedien.be). Le temps de réponse des projets les plus consommateurs de ressources sont inférieurs à 500ms pour 75% des pages ;
l’infrastructure collecte en permanence des métriques sur son systèmes (openTSDB), visualisables via Grafana. Elle permet également la centralisation, le tri et le stockage des logs ;
le SLA sur les projets hébergés est de 99.9% ;
l’infrastructure logicielle est basée sur des conteneurs. Des serveurs spécifiques viennent s’ajouter à ceux-ci et proposent des services persistants: PostgreSQL en réplication, cluster RabbitMQ, …

Le graphe routier est extrait d’OpenStreetMap. L’import du graphe routier et le découpage des routes se fait à l’aide de PostGIS.
